The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) co-convened the AIATSIS National Indigenous Research Conference with QUT in July 1-3, 2019 at their Gardens Point campus in Brisbane.

The theme was Research for the 21st century.

The 2019 conference built on previous themes of impact and engagement, to explore the interweaving strands of capacity of research and the transformative capability of Indigenous research for the 21st century.

The program included the following themes:

  • Indigenous data sovereignty
  • Indigenous knowledges in research and IP
  • Indigenisation of systems – and the increasing use of Indigenous systems
  • Women’s experiences
  • Longitudinal research
  • Indigenous health and wellbeing
  • Indigenous participation in higher education (and education more broadly)
  • Repatriation
  • Future of the research endeavour

The conference drew together researchers, policymakers, cultural and collecting institutions, the corporate sector, and Indigenous organisations and communities to consider the capacity of the research sector to meet the needs of Indigenous policy and community into the future.

The conference was held at QUT Gardens Point P Block, QUT, Brisbane City QLD 4000
