Temporary employment register

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) is a world-renowned research, collecting and publishing organisation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures, traditions, languages and stories, past and present.

We are seeking expressions of interest from individuals seeking temporary employment in a range of activities. These applications will be included in AIATSIS’ temporary employment register from which temporary staff may be selected. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants are expected to have a knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures and issues affecting Indigenous Australians today, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

AIATSIS employs a skilled and diverse workforce to promote the knowledge and understanding of Australian Indigenous cultures, past and present. 

Below are the areas within AIATSIS and the type of positions required.

Collections

The Collections team look for applicants with experience in any of the following roles: reference desk, manuscript management, conservation, cataloguing and inter-library loans.

Archives

The Archives look for experienced audio, film and video technicians, photographers and staff with multimedia skills in electronic media. Experience in audiovisual archiving is a bonus, as well as specialising in disciplines represented in the collections: anthropology, linguistics, history, archaeology, musicology, object conservation and material culture.

Administration

AIATSIS require staff with general clerical skills, including business writing and familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite, to fulfil a range of clerical administrative positions. Examples of positions include Executive Assistant, Reception, Registry/Records Management, Customer Service and Finance Officer.

Research assistants

Research assistants are employed in a variety of tasks involved in Research work. Expertise and familiarity in the fields of Native Title and Indigenous studies is desirable.

Book editors and designers

Aboriginal Studies Press is AIATSIS’ in-house publisher and look for Book Editors and Designers for contract work. Editors experienced in manuscript development, structural editing and copy editing are highly desirable, as are designers with experience in book and other paper product design or experienced illustrator in this field.
